LIFE-LINK APPEAL

OLYMPIC TRUCE at Schools World-wide -

A Youth Commitment!

A Peace Appeal to schools world-wide 2005!
The Life-Link Friendship-Schools Programme (Life-Link) invites schools world-wide to perform a few hours peace action based on the theme Olympic Truce - Get on the Move!
You will find guidelines on the www.life-link.org, or contact Life-Link.

WHY?

  • The Olympic Truce initiative and the Olympic ideals (www.olympictruce.org) connect: Peace - Health – Sport – Physical activity.
  • Olympic Truce Campaign 2005 at schools world-wide is the start of a historical event - to show the world that warfare can be abolished. Warfare is not engraved into the genetics or instincts of man. Warfare is a social invention as discussed in the UNESCO document 1989 on Seville Statement on Violence.
  • An Olympic Truce peace action performed by students at your school during a few hours, will be recognised at the forthcoming Life-Link XII international youth and schools conference in Alexandria Egypt November 2005. All schools sending a report on performed Olympic Truce actions will be commemorated "for ever" on a Life-Link Olympic Truce 2005 memorial plate, and all schools will also receive a certificate. All participating schools will further more be recognized at the www.life-link.org,  "Schools & Actions", Action 1:15.
  • The Olympic Truce is unanimously supported by a United Nations resolution November 2005.
  • The Olympic Truce Campaign 2005 was endorsed by youth and educators at the    Life-Link XI international conference, Moscow August 2004.
  • An Olympic truce action at your school is a good reason to invite local or national sport heroes to enrich your planned activities, and to attract parents and media.

WHEN TO PERFORM THE OLYMPIC TRUCE ACTION?
Any day before November 2005, but preferably early 2005!

Appoint some hours with discussions on the Olympic Ideals followed by some joyful Olympic Truce physical activities.

PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS  - OLYMPIC TRUCE CAMPAIGN 2005

Introduction to the Olympic Truce –

A challenge for youth and schools world-wide!

Truce means to lay down fighting weapons, to take a “time-out” from hostilities, time for reflection.

The Olympic Truce takes us back to ancient Greece year 776 B.C. when the Mediterranean city kings of Sparta and Pisa agreed to a two weeks truce every fourth year in order to break the cycle of ongoing conflicts. The conflicts should during these days be replaced by friendly athletic competitions taking place in Olympia at Peloponnesus. The early Olympic Games went on every fourth year for almost 1200 years.

1896, in Athens Greece, the Olympic Games were resurrected for the modern era, celebrating humanity, noble competition and the peaceful coexistence of all peoples and cultures.

During the 1990s the United Nations in resolutions urges the Member States to observe the Olympic Truce.

Year 2000 the International Truce Foundation and the International Olympic Truce Centre are founded by the International Olympic Committee.

Year 2000 at the United Nations Millennium Summit, more than 160 Heads of State and Government adopts a Millennium Declaration that includes a paragraph on the observance of the Olympic Truce!

2004 in connection with the Olympic Games in Athens, efforts are made to bring the Olympic Truce closer to youth and schools in the world.

Facing the new millennium and after a war-ridden 20th century the realistic challenge must be to abandon warfare as the ultimate method to solve human conflicts.

Warfare does not emerge from our genes! Warfare is a social invention, planned with weapons production, trained and exercised for specific reasons and goals.

If we can stop warfare for 16 days during the Olympic Games, lets do it forever!

Youth – Teachers – Parents –Communities! Schools can take the lead!

The Life-Link Friendship-Schools peace action Olympic Truce – Get on the Move and the Olympic Truce Campaign at Schools World-wide 2005 can help your school to join.
